Cantor Steven Pearlston...

 

Cantor Steven Pearlston received his degree in conducting from Occidental College in Los Angeles, his Certification in Jewish Education from the Haim Greenberg Seminary in Jerusalem, and his Cantorial investiture from Hebrew Union College in New York, where he was also involved in the School of Education.  He studied opera at the Juilliard School, where he appeared with the American Opera Center. For four seasons he was affiliated with the New York public schools, bringing classical music to local High Schools, and has conducted master classes at Queensborough Community College. He has served on the music faculties of the State University of New Paltz and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, and taught Jewish History at Marymount College.

Cantor Pearlston has sung with regional American opera companies, including Opera Omaha and the Washington Civic Opera. In operetta, his credits include runs at various Northeast theaters. He has appeared as Conductor and Musical Director for the summer seasons of Opera Fort Collins in Colorado.

As concert soloist, he has appeared at Alice Tully Hall in the works of J.S. Bach, and with the New York Philharmonic in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. He has toured throughout the U.S. and Canada with the New York Vocal Arts Ensemble. Cantor Pearlston has presented his program "What is Jewish Music?" at synagogues throughout the United States. To his credit are several world premiere performances of compositions on Jewish themes at Merkin Concert Hall in New York and the New York premier of "Gimpel and the Fool" at the 92nd Street YMHA Jewish Opera Series.

Cantor Pearlston is the composer of a complete Shabbat Evening Service and arrangements of traditional liturgical melodies.  Cantor Pearlston is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and the Association for Jewish Studies
